DiversiTech Self-Regulating Heat HC-04

The DiversiTech HC-04 self-regulating heat cable provides freeze protection for condensate drains, exposed piping, and other cold-vulnerable components in HVAC and refrigeration installations. The cable is supplied as a prepared assembly, allowing technicians to install freeze protection without cutting, splicing, or terminating raw bulk cable in the field.

The self-regulating polymer core varies its power output along the entire length in response to surrounding temperature. Colder sections conduct more current and generate more heat; warmer sections throttle back automatically. Because the regulation is continuous and local rather than governed by a single thermostat, the cable cannot burn itself out at overlaps and adapts to uneven conditions along a run, such as a drain line that passes from a warm mechanical room into an unheated attic.

Contractors use self-regulating cable to keep condensate flowing from rooftop package units, air handlers, fan coils, and ductless line sets during winter operation, and to protect short runs of water and drain piping in garages, crawlspaces, and exterior chases. It is also applied to walk-in cooler and freezer drain lines, where a frozen drain leads to standing water and ice buildup on the floor.

Efficiency improves substantially when the cable is covered with pipe insulation after installation, which retains generated heat at the pipe surface. Follow the manufacturer's routing, spacing, and circuit protection requirements, and verify the installation meets local electrical code. Secure the cable with approved adhesive tape rather than wire ties or metal clamps that could damage the outer jacket.
