DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 50MFD PRCF50A

The DiversiTech PRCF50A is a 50 microfarad, 440 volt round run capacitor for single-phase compressor and motor applications in HVAC and refrigeration equipment.

Run capacitors retain a stored charge after power is removed, and that charge is capable of delivering a painful and potentially dangerous shock. Before handling any capacitor, isolate the equipment, verify the absence of supply voltage, and discharge the capacitor deliberately.

The correct method is to discharge through a resistance, using a resistor of a few thousand ohms with an adequate wattage rating connected across the terminals for several seconds. Shorting the terminals with a screwdriver blade, still a widespread practice, produces a high current arc that pits the terminals, damages the tool, and can spatter molten metal. On a dual capacitor, each section must be discharged separately, and each should be discharged to the common terminal.

After discharging, confirm with a meter that no voltage remains before touching the terminals.

Fifty microfarad is a compressor run value used on larger residential and light commercial condensing units.
