DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 45MFD POCF45A

The DiversiTech POCF45A is a 45 microfarad, 440 volt oval run capacitor for compressor and fan motor duty in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Testing a run capacitor correctly requires the capacitor to be isolated. With power off and the capacitor discharged, disconnect at least one lead and measure across the terminals with a meter set to capacitance. Measuring in circuit produces readings influenced by the motor windings and is unreliable. Compare the reading against the marked value and the stated tolerance, generally plus or minus six percent.

An alternative field method measures current through the start winding and calculates capacitance from applied voltage and frequency, which has the advantage of testing the capacitor under actual operating conditions but requires the system to be running and is more involved.

Forty five microfarad serves compressor run duty on larger residential systems.

Whichever method is used, the reading should be recorded against the service call. A capacitor measuring near the low edge of tolerance on a system with other symptoms is worth replacing preemptively, particularly at the start of the cooling season, since the alternative is a return visit during the first extended hot spell.
