DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 40MFD PRCF40A

The DiversiTech PRCF40A is a 40 microfarad, 440 volt round run capacitor for single-phase compressor and motor applications in HVAC and refrigeration systems.

The relationship between capacitance and motor current is direct and measurable. A run capacitor below its rated value reduces the phase shift in the auxiliary winding, which reduces torque and increases current in the main winding as the motor works harder to carry the load. On a compressor, that shows up as running amps above nameplate and, in advanced cases, as intermittent tripping of the internal overload.

This gives a useful diagnostic sequence. When a compressor draws high current, measure the run capacitor first. If capacitance is correct, the elevated current points to a refrigerant-side problem such as overcharge, non-condensables, or a restricted condenser, or to a mechanical or electrical fault in the compressor itself.

Working through the capacitor first avoids the expensive error of condemning a compressor that is being asked to run on inadequate capacitance.

Forty microfarad is a compressor run value common on three to four ton residential condensing units.
