DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 40/5MFD PRCFD405A

The DiversiTech PRCFD405A is a round dual run capacitor rated 40 plus 5 microfarad at 440 volts for compressor and condenser fan motor service.

The 440 volt rating is a maximum continuous working voltage, not a requirement that the equipment operate at 440 volts. Residential condensing units run on a nominal 240 volt single-phase supply, yet the voltage appearing across the run capacitor in service is considerably higher than the supply voltage because of the phase relationship between the motor windings. The capacitor's rating must accommodate that elevated voltage, which is why 370 and 440 volt units are the two ratings found in HVAC service rather than something near 240.

A 440 volt capacitor may be fitted wherever a 370 volt unit was originally specified, at matching capacitance. It operates further below its design stress and typically lasts longer. The reverse substitution, fitting 370 where 440 was specified, subjects the dielectric to voltage beyond its rating and results in early failure.

Capacitance, unlike voltage, must always match exactly.

The 40 microfarad section serves the compressor and the 5 microfarad section the condenser fan motor. Confirm both values, case size, and terminal layout before ordering, and discharge both sections before handling.
