DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 25MFD PRCF25A

The DiversiTech PRCF25A is a 25 microfarad, 440 volt round run capacitor for single-phase motor applications in HVAC and refrigeration systems.

Modern run capacitors use metallized polypropylene film construction. Extremely thin metal electrodes are vacuum deposited onto a polypropylene dielectric film, which is then wound into the finished element. The advantage of this construction over older foil designs is self-healing: when a weak point in the dielectric breaks down, the fault current vaporises the thin metallization immediately around the breach, isolating it and clearing the fault. The capacitor continues to function with marginally reduced capacitance rather than failing as a short circuit.

That property is what makes the failure mode of a run capacitor gradual rather than sudden. Each healing event removes a small amount of active electrode area, and capacitance declines over years of service until it falls outside tolerance and the motor begins to suffer.

The practical consequence for service work is that capacitors should be measured, not inspected. A capacitor that has drifted to eighty percent of rated value looks identical to a new one.
