DiversiTech Run Capacitor 440V 20MFD POCF20A

The DiversiTech POCF20A is a 20 microfarad, 440 volt oval run capacitor for single-phase motors in air conditioning, heat pump, and refrigeration equipment.

Twenty microfarad is a commonly specified value for condenser fan motors on residential split systems and for larger indoor blower motors. Because a run capacitor is in circuit continuously, its condition directly determines how the motor performs at every moment of operation, not only at start.

Capacitance value must match the motor nameplate. Substituting a different value on the assumption that close is adequate changes the phase angle in the auxiliary winding, and the resulting current imbalance produces winding heat that accumulates over the season rather than causing an immediate fault. This is why motors that were repaired with a mismatched capacitor typically fail months later, with the original repair no longer suspected.

The 440 volt rating provides margin above the applied voltage seen across the capacitor in operation, which is higher than the supply voltage because of the phase relationship in the motor circuit.

Verify capacitance with a meter rather than assuming a capacitor is good because the motor runs. A capacitor that has drifted ten or fifteen percent below rating will still support operation while steadily damaging the motor.
