DiversiTech Nitrogen Purge Tool DP-1

The DiversiTech DP-1 is a nitrogen purge tool used to set and control purge flow during brazing.

Setting a purge correctly involves a smaller flow than most people expect, and both errors have consequences.

Too little flow fails to displace the air in the tube, and oxide scale forms exactly as it would with no purge at all. A purge that has been set but is not actually flowing, because an outlet was not provided or a valve is closed, produces the same result while giving false confidence.

Too much flow cools the joint so that the filler will not flow, disturbs the flame making it difficult to control the heat, and at higher rates can blow molten filler out of the joint.

The requirement for an outlet is the point most often missed. Gas must be able to escape from the far end of the tube, otherwise pressure equalises and flow stops. A joint left open, a valve cracked, or a port opened provides it.

The purge should be established before heat is applied and maintained until the joint has cooled, since oxidation continues while the copper is hot.

A purge tool provides the low, controllable flow this requires, which a standard regulator alone does not deliver precisely.

Confirm the tool's connections and flow range suit the equipment, verify flow is actually occurring, and use only nitrogen.
