DiversiTech Insta-Tap Pliers QT-100

The DiversiTech QT-100 Insta-Tap pliers are a tool for creating a service access point on refrigerant tubing.

Line tap devices pierce a tube and provide a service connection where none exists, which is occasionally the only way to obtain a pressure reading or recover refrigerant from a sealed system with no service ports.

Domestic refrigeration equipment is the common case. Refrigerators, freezers, and some small sealed systems are manufactured without service ports, and diagnosing or recovering from them requires a means of access.

The important limitation is that piercing type taps are generally not acceptable as permanent connections. The seal relies on a gasket compressed against the tube, and that seal degrades over time. A tap left in place as a permanent service port is a slow leak in the making, and many manufacturers and codes prohibit their permanent use.

The correct practice where a system will remain in service is to use the tap to gain access, complete the work, then remove the tap and braze the tube properly or fit a permanent access valve.

Where the equipment is being decommissioned and the refrigerant recovered, the tap serves its purpose and the concern does not arise.

Confirm the tool suits the tube sizes encountered, verify the seal before relying on readings, and plan a permanent repair where the system remains in service.
