DiversiTech Capacitor 55/7.5 MFD 440/3 TRCFD5575

The DiversiTech TRCFD5575 is a round dual run capacitor rated 55 plus 7.5 microfarad at 440 and 370 volts for compressor and condenser fan motor duty.

The contactor and the run capacitor are more closely linked than their separate functions suggest. Every start draws inrush current through the contactor contacts, and the magnitude and duration of that inrush depend partly on how quickly the compressor comes up to speed, which depends in turn on the run capacitor.

A compressor starting slowly on degraded capacitance holds locked rotor current through the contacts for longer on every cycle. Over a season of short cycles that accelerates contact pitting, and pitted contacts introduce voltage drop, which further degrades starting performance. The two faults reinforce each other.

For this reason a contactor found with badly pitted or welded contacts warrants a capacitance measurement in the same visit, and a badly degraded capacitor warrants a contactor inspection. Replacing one and leaving the other is a common cause of a repeat call.

The 55 microfarad section serves the compressor and the 7.5 microfarad section the condenser fan motor.
