DiversiTech Capacitor 55 MFD 440/370V TOCF55

The DiversiTech TOCF55 is a 55 microfarad oval run capacitor rated 440 and 370 volts for compressor and motor run applications in HVAC equipment.

The oval case exists to solve a packaging problem. Electrical compartments in packaged rooftop units, air handlers, and some condensing units are shallow, and a round capacitor of the diameter needed for a large capacitance value will not fit behind the panel. Flattening the case into an oval preserves the internal element volume while reducing one dimension, which is what allows a 55 microfarad capacitor to sit in a compartment that could not accept its round equivalent.

Electrically there is no difference. An oval and a round capacitor of the same capacitance and voltage rating perform identically, and either may replace the other where mounting and clearance permit.

Oval capacitors mount with a strap or bracket shaped to the case. Where an oval is being substituted for a round unit, the correct strap should be fitted rather than adapting the existing one, since a capacitor that can shift in its mounting will eventually damage its own terminals.

Confirm capacitance, case dimensions, and terminal arrangement before ordering, and discharge the capacitor before handling.
