The Yellow Jacket 60638 is a short hex key adapter for service valve operation in confined locations.

Access is the recurring constraint in service valve work. Valves are positioned where the pipework requires rather than where a technician would like, and a standard hex key frequently cannot be inserted, or can be inserted but cannot be turned through a useful arc.

A short adapter reduces the length needed to engage the stem, and where it accepts a ratchet or driver it allows the stem to be turned in a confined space without the full swing a conventional key requires.

The compromise is leverage. A short tool applies less torque for a given hand force, which is generally desirable on a valve stem since excessive torque is what damages them, but it can be a limitation on a stem that is stiff from age.

A stiff stem should be investigated rather than forced. Corrosion, damage to the packing, or a stem that has been overtightened previously are all possibilities, and applying more force to a seized stem rounds the socket.

Valve stem caps should be refitted after operation. On most service valves the cap is a seal rather than a dust cover, and it forms the primary barrier against leakage past the stem packing.

Confirm the adapter suits the stem sizes and the drivers in use, and inspect for wear before relying on it.
