Yellow Jacket Ratchet Wrench 60613

The Yellow Jacket 60613 is a ratchet service wrench for operating refrigeration and air conditioning valve stems.

Valve stem packing is the seal that prevents refrigerant escaping around a stem, and it deserves attention whenever a valve is operated.

The packing is compressed around the stem by a gland nut. Over time it hardens, takes a set, and can begin to weep, particularly on valves that are operated infrequently and then moved after years in one position.

The symptom is refrigerant escaping at the stem when the valve is turned, sometimes only while it is in an intermediate position.

Some valves allow the gland to be tightened slightly to restore the seal, and where that is possible it is done gently, since overtightening makes the stem stiff and increases the risk of rounding the square.

The stem cap provides the secondary seal, and on most service valves it is fitted with a gasket and forms the primary barrier against leakage past the packing. A cap left off or fitted without its gasket allows a weeping stem to lose charge continuously.

Refitting caps properly is a habit that prevents a genuinely common cause of slow charge loss.

Confirm the wrench suits the stem sizes encountered, operate stems smoothly without shock loading, and refit stem caps with their gaskets after any valve operation.
