The Yellow Jacket 60616 is an offset service wrench for operating valve stems in restricted access positions.

Offset designs solve the access problem that occurs when a valve stem is positioned so close to an obstruction that a straight wrench cannot be fitted onto it, or can be fitted but cannot be turned.

This is a common situation. Service valves are located where the pipework and cabinet layout dictate, frequently against a panel, beside the compressor, or in a corner of the unit, and equipment designers rarely prioritise wrench clearance.

An offset places the drive away from the handle axis, so the handle can occupy a different space from the one directly above the stem. Combined with a ratchet action, this often allows a valve to be operated where no straight tool would work.

The compromise is torque and control. An offset applies force at a distance from the drive, which introduces a side load on the stem, and the technician has less direct feel for how much force is being applied.

That argues for smooth, moderate force. A stem that resists should be investigated rather than forced, since side loading a seized stem is an efficient way to round it.

Confirm the drive size suits the stems encountered, inspect the drive for wear, and refit stem caps with their gaskets after operating any valve.
