The Yellow Jacket 69086 is a digital handheld vacuum gauge for measuring evacuation.

A micron gauge measures vacuum on a scale that manifold gauges cannot approach. Where a compound gauge resolves perhaps to the nearest inch of mercury, a micron gauge reads in microns, and the difference between an adequate and an inadequate evacuation lies entirely within the range a compound gauge shows as simply full vacuum.

That distinction is the reason the instrument exists. A system pumped until the compound gauge pegs may still contain sufficient moisture to form acids, freeze at the metering device, and eventually destroy the compressor. Only a micron gauge shows whether the evacuation has actually removed it.

Two practices make the measurement meaningful. The gauge must be connected at the system rather than at the pump, so it reads past all the restrictions in the evacuation path. And the isolation test must be performed: with the target reached, the pump is valved off and the reading observed. Holding indicates success; a rise that stabilises indicates remaining moisture; a continuous rise indicates a leak.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning evacuation and leak verification.
