Spectronics UV Light LED Leak SPE-HVL-CS

The Spectronics SPE-HVL-CS is an LED ultraviolet leak detection lamp for locating dye marked refrigerant leaks.

LED ultraviolet lamps have largely displaced the earlier lamp technologies for this work, and the reasons are practical.

They reach full output immediately rather than requiring a warm-up period, which matters when inspection is a brief part of a longer job. They are robust, tolerating the handling that field work involves, where earlier lamps with glass envelopes were fragile. They draw less power, so battery operation gives useful runtime. And their output is concentrated in the wavelength range that excites the dye, rather than spread across a spectrum.

Output intensity determines what can be found. A brighter lamp reveals smaller traces and works better in ambient light, which is the limiting factor in most field inspection.

UV enhancing glasses used alongside the lamp improve contrast substantially by filtering the visible light the lamp emits while passing the dye's fluorescence, and they also provide eye protection.

Ultraviolet light should not be directed at the eyes or at other people.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning leak detection and service.
