Spectronics Leak Detector Cartridge SPE-EZ5E-CS

The Spectronics SPE-EZ5E-CS is a replacement dye cartridge for refrigerant leak detection systems.

Cartridge based dye introduction addresses the practical difficulty of getting dye into a sealed pressurised system.

The dye must be introduced without opening the system, without introducing air or moisture, and in a controlled quantity, since excess dye is undesirable and insufficient dye will not produce a visible trace.

A cartridge system uses a pre-measured quantity in a container that connects to the service port and is injected using system pressure or a dedicated injector, which addresses all three requirements.

Dosing matters. Manufacturers specify a quantity related to system capacity, and adding substantially more does not improve detection. Excess dye and its carrier fluid become a contaminant, and on systems using polyol ester oil the dye must be compatible with that oil chemistry.

Recording that dye has been added, ideally with a label at the equipment, serves the next technician, who will otherwise be uncertain whether a fluorescent trace indicates a current leak or a historical one.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning leak detection.
