The Southwire 552060407 is 20 gauge, 6 conductor thermostat cable supplied on a spool.

Voltage drop is the consideration that governs gauge selection in thermostat wiring, and it is more consequential than the small currents involved might suggest.

A control circuit operating at 24 volts has limited margin. The contactor coil at the far end requires a minimum voltage to pull in reliably, and the losses accumulated across a long run of small conductors, several safety devices in series, and a number of connections can reduce the available voltage below that minimum.

The symptom is a contactor that chatters or fails to pull in, appearing intermittently and typically when the supply voltage is at the low end of its range. Because the fault depends on the whole circuit rather than any single component, it resists diagnosis unless voltage is measured at the coil while it is being energised.

20 gauge is adequate for typical residential runs. Longer runs, or circuits with several devices in series, warrant 18 gauge.

Six conductors provide capacity beyond a basic conventional system, accommodating a heat pump or a future equipment change.
