The Southwire 553030507 is 18 gauge, 3 conductor thermostat cable in a 500 foot package.

Three conductor cable covers a basic heating only installation, providing supply, heat, and a return path, or serves as a supplementary run adding three functions to an existing installation.

A common use in retrofit work is exactly that: an existing four or five conductor cable is short of what new equipment requires, and rather than replacing it, an additional cable is run alongside to carry the extra signals.
