Southwire Shielded Plenum P40073-1D

The Southwire P40073-1D is shielded plenum cable, a control cable with a conductive shield and a jacket rated for installation in environmental air handling spaces.

Two distinct properties define this product. The plenum rating addresses fire safety: cable installed in a return air plenum or other air handling space must have low smoke and flame spread characteristics, because a fire in that space would otherwise distribute toxic combustion products throughout the building via the air distribution system. Building codes require plenum-rated cable in these locations, and substituting standard cable is both a code violation and a genuine life safety issue.

The shield addresses electrical interference. A conductive shield surrounding the conductors intercepts electromagnetic noise before it couples into the signal, which matters for cable runs carrying sensor signals, communication between controllers, or low level analog data. Modern HVAC systems increasingly use communicating controls, variable speed drives, and networked building management systems, and drives in particular are significant noise sources. Unshielded control cable routed near a drive or its motor leads can pick up enough interference to corrupt communication or produce erratic sensor readings.

For shielding to work, the shield must be grounded, and typically at one end only. Grounding both ends can create a ground loop that carries current and makes interference worse rather than better. Follow the control manufacturer's specific grounding instructions.
