The Southwire 552055407 is 20 gauge, 5 conductor thermostat cable supplied in a 250 foot package.

Thermostat cable carries the low voltage control signals between the thermostat and the equipment. It is not power cable, and its conductors are sized for the modest current a control circuit draws rather than for any substantial load.

Conductor count determines what the cable can support. Five conductors cover a conventional system with heating, cooling, fan, transformer supply, and a common, which is the minimum configuration for a thermostat requiring continuous power. Fewer conductors force compromises, most commonly the omission of the common, which then prevents a connected thermostat being fitted later.
