The Southwire 553080407 is 18 gauge, 8 conductor thermostat cable supplied on a spool.

Eight conductors accommodate demanding control configurations: multi-stage heat pumps with several stages of auxiliary heat, systems with dehumidification or ventilation outputs, equipment with outdoor sensor connections, and installations with accessories requiring their own control signals.

Cable of this conductor count is also run deliberately as future provision. On new construction, the incremental cost of eight conductor cable over five is small relative to the labour, and the spare conductors accommodate whatever the property requires over the following decades: an equipment change, a zoning retrofit, an added accessory, or a thermostat technology that does not yet exist.

Retrofitting cable into a finished building is expensive and disruptive, which is precisely why the provision is worth making at the point when it costs almost nothing.

Where spare conductors are left unused, they should be capped at both ends and their existence recorded, since a spare conductor nobody knows about is of no use to the next technician.
