The Southwire 553085407 is 18 gauge, 8 conductor thermostat cable supplied in a 250 foot package.

Documenting control wiring is a practice worth more than its cost, and an eight conductor run is exactly where it pays.

With eight conductors, colour alone is insufficient to identify function reliably, because colour conventions beyond the first four or five are inconsistent between manufacturers and between installers. A conductor that is brown in one installation may carry an entirely different function in the next.

The remedy is labelling at both ends at the time of installation: a marker or a label at the equipment and at the thermostat, recording what each conductor connects to, including which are spare.

A record inside the equipment panel door, or on the back of the thermostat subbase, serves every subsequent visit. Without it, a technician replacing the thermostat in ten years must trace conductors individually.

The same applies when only some conductors are landed. Recording which are spare, and confirming they are capped, prevents the next person assuming a live conductor is unused.
