Zoning systems and multi-stage equipment increase conductor requirements beyond what a conventional installation needs, and six conductors is frequently the point at which those requirements begin to be met.

A zone panel requires connections between the panel and each thermostat, and between the panel and the equipment. Each zone thermostat needs its own run, and each damper requires its own connection, so a zoned installation involves considerably more control wiring than a single thermostat system.

Multi-stage equipment requires a conductor for each stage. A two stage furnace with two stage cooling, a fan output, a supply, and a common already requires seven conductors.

Communicating systems, by contrast, reduce the requirement, since they carry all information over a small number of conductors using a data protocol. The trade-off is that communicating systems are manufacturer specific and generally cannot be mixed with equipment from another maker.
