The Southwire 553050407 is 18 gauge, 5 conductor thermostat cable supplied on a spool.

Five conductors provide the configuration most modern conventional systems require: transformer supply, heating, cooling, fan, and common. The common conductor is what enables a digital, programmable, or connected thermostat to be powered continuously rather than drawing parasitically through the control circuit.

Parasitic power is worth understanding because it explains a category of intermittent thermostat faults. A thermostat without a common conductor draws a small current through the heating or cooling circuit, which requires that circuit to remain slightly conductive even when not calling. On some equipment this causes the relay or contactor to buzz, or in extreme cases to chatter, and on modern boards with solid state outputs it can produce unpredictable behaviour.

Fitting a common conductor resolves these faults directly, and where the cable already contains a spare conductor it is a matter of landing it at both ends rather than running new cable.
