The Southwire 553045407 is 18 gauge, 4 conductor thermostat cable supplied in a 250 foot package.

Four conductor cable is the historical standard for a conventional residential system: transformer supply, heating, cooling, and fan. For decades this was sufficient, because thermostats drew their operating power parasitically from the control circuit rather than requiring a dedicated supply.

That changed with the arrival of digital, programmable, and connected thermostats, which need continuous power and therefore a common conductor. A four conductor installation has none available, and this is the single most frequent obstacle encountered when replacing a thermostat in an older property.

The available responses are to run a replacement cable with more conductors, to fit a wiring extender that carries the additional signal over the existing conductors, to use an adapter supplied by some thermostat manufacturers, or to select a thermostat that does not require a common.
