Robertshaw Bi-Flow Filter Drier RBFD-083S

The Robertshaw RBFD-083S is a bi-flow filter drier designed for heat pump systems where refrigerant flows in both directions.

A conventional filter drier works in one direction only. Refrigerant enters, passes through the desiccant core and filtration media, and leaves. Reverse the flow and the drier releases the debris it has captured back into the system, and in extreme cases the desiccant core itself breaks up and circulates.

Heat pumps reverse flow every time the reversing valve changes between heating and cooling. A standard drier fitted in a heat pump liquid line is therefore actively harmful, discharging accumulated contamination into the circuit at each changeover.

A bi-flow drier resolves this with an internal arrangement of check valves that routes refrigerant through the desiccant in the same direction regardless of which way it enters. Filtration and drying then function correctly in both modes.

The practical point at service is that a heat pump requires a bi-flow drier, and a standard drier must never be substituted even temporarily. The parts look broadly similar and the error is easy to make when working from a general parts stock.

Where a drier is fitted in a location that only ever sees one flow direction, a standard unidirectional drier remains appropriate.
