ProCharge Leak Detector UV Light Pen 4514

The ProCharge 4514 is a UV light pen for locating refrigerant leaks marked with fluorescent dye.

A compact ultraviolet light is what makes dye leak detection practical. The dye fluoresces under UV illumination, appearing as a bright mark at the point where refrigerant and oil have escaped.

Pen format lights suit inspection in confined spaces where a larger lamp cannot be positioned: inside equipment cabinets, behind panels, around compressor terminals and service valves, and along line sets in restricted runs.

Effective use depends on conditions. Ambient light washes out the fluorescence, so inspection is easier in darkened conditions, and outdoor daytime inspection may require shading the area. UV enhancing glasses improve contrast considerably and are worth carrying.

A point worth remembering is that oil traces alone, without dye, also indicate a leak. Refrigerant escaping carries oil with it, and an oily film at a joint, a fitting, or a coil return bend is evidence of leakage regardless of whether dye is present. Inspecting for oil traces before reaching for any instrument frequently locates the leak directly.

Ultraviolet light should not be directed at the eyes.
