Pro1 IAQ Programmable Thermostat T755

The Pro1 IAQ T755 is a programmable thermostat for residential and light commercial heating and cooling systems.

Thermostat replacement carries a small but real risk that is worth managing: shorting the control circuit while working at the wall.

The 24 volt control circuit is fed from a transformer, and on many systems the transformer is protected only by a fuse on the control board or, on older equipment, not at all. Touching a live conductor to another, or to a grounded surface, blows the fuse at best and damages the transformer or board at worst.

Isolating power at the equipment before disconnecting anything eliminates the risk entirely, and takes less time than the diagnosis that follows a blown control fuse.

The other precaution is recording the existing wiring. Photographing the terminals before removing conductors gives a reliable reference, and it captures information that the new thermostat's instructions cannot: which conductor colours were actually used, since colour conventions are frequently not followed in the field.

Labelling conductors as they are removed serves the same purpose where a photograph is impractical.
