A hose bender addresses a failure that is invisible until the hose bursts.

Every hose has a minimum bend radius, and bending it tighter than that does real damage: the outer wall stretches thin, the inner wall buckles, and the reinforcement layers separate. The hose looks fine. It works fine. And then it fails, at the bend, under pressure, some months later — and the failure is blamed on the hose.

A coil bender is a spring wrapped around the hose at the bend. It distributes the bend across the coil's length instead of letting it concentrate at one point, so the hose follows a radius it can survive. It also protects the hose from abrasion at exactly the point where it is most likely to rub.
