PPGDFT010/01 ProLuxe Gloss Gallon 400 Sq. Ft./Gal. Lacquer

The PPGDFT010/01 is a gloss lacquer, 1 gallon, covering 400 sq ft per gallon.

Two data problems first. The brand field on this row is blank. And the description names ProLuxe, while the part number DFT010 is Deft — PPG's nitrocellulose lacquer line. ProLuxe is PPG's exterior wood stain range and is not a lacquer. Verify the product identity before publishing; the part number points to Deft Clear Wood Finish.

Nitrocellulose lacquer is worth understanding because it behaves unlike any modern finish. It does not cure — there is no chemical reaction, no crosslinking, no point of no return. The solvent evaporates and the resin is left behind, and that is the whole process.

The consequence is that lacquer redissolves in its own solvent. Each new coat melts into the one beneath it, so the film becomes a single continuous layer rather than a stack of discrete ones. That is why lacquer levels itself so beautifully, why it has no witness lines, and why a damaged lacquer finish can be repaired invisibly — something no polyurethane can do.

The trade is durability. Lacquer is softer than a crosslinked finish and it is vulnerable to the solvents it dissolves in, including alcohol.

Lacquer is extremely flammable and the vapour is heavier than air. Ventilate properly and eliminate ignition sources.
