Panasonic Damper Ceiling Radiation PC-RD06C6

The Panasonic PC-RD06C6 is a ceiling radiation damper, installed with a ceiling mounted ventilation fan in a fire rated floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling assembly.

A fire rated ceiling assembly achieves its rating as a complete system, and every penetration through it is a potential breach. A ceiling exhaust fan creates exactly such a penetration, and cutting one into a rated assembly without addressing it invalidates the rating for the entire assembly.

A ceiling radiation damper restores the assembly's integrity. Under normal conditions it permits airflow through the fan. When the temperature at the ceiling rises to the damper's actuation point, indicating fire in the space below, a fusible link releases and the damper closes, blocking the opening and limiting the transfer of heat and fire through the assembly into the space above.

This is a code requirement rather than a specification option. Where a rated assembly is penetrated by a ceiling fan, a listed ceiling radiation damper suited to that assembly and that fan is required, and the installation must follow the listing.

Dampers are specific to the fan model and the assembly type. The damper must be listed for use with the particular fan and appropriate to the rated assembly being penetrated, so substitution is not a matter of matching dimensions.
