OFF! SCJ1842 Deep Woods Off 6 Oz. Insect Repellent Aerosol Spray

The OFF! SCJ1842 is Deep Woods Off insect repellent aerosol spray, 6 oz.

The Deep Woods designation indicates the higher-strength formulation in the OFF! range, and the active ingredient in that line is DEET. Verify the concentration on the label — it is the specification that matters and it is not in this data.

What DEET concentration actually controls is worth knowing, because it is almost universally misunderstood. Higher concentration does not repel more effectively. It repels for longer. A low-concentration product works as well as a high-concentration one; it just stops working sooner. So the choice is duration, not strength, and the correct concentration is the one that covers the time outdoors.

The property that industrial and outdoor users need to know: DEET dissolves plastics. It attacks synthetic fabrics, watch crystals, spectacle frames, fishing line, painted surfaces, and vinyl. Spray it on a hand and then handle a plastic instrument housing and the housing is damaged. This catches people out constantly, and it is not a minor cosmetic effect.

The reason to carry it at all in a work context is not comfort. Mosquitoes and ticks carry disease, and outdoor workers — utility, forestry, surveying, construction — take that exposure daily.

Follow the label. It is a regulated pesticide and the label is the law.
