The Milwaukee MIL48-22-3982 is a 100 ft Bold Line chalk line reel with chalk, blue.

A chalk line marks a dead straight line across a span no straightedge can cover. The line is drawn out, pulled taut between two points, lifted and snapped — depositing chalk along the perfectly straight path a tensioned string describes. The technique is thousands of years old and nothing has replaced it.

Blue is the chalk colour and it is a decision with consequences. Chalk colours differ in permanence, and blue is among the more permanent — considerably harder to remove than white. That is exactly what is wanted on a jobsite where a layout line must survive weather, traffic, and a week of being walked on. It is exactly what is not wanted on a surface that will be visible when the job is finished, where blue chalk can be very difficult to get out.

The rule that follows: permanent colours for layout that must last, white for anything that has to disappear.

The Bold Line designation refers to the line thickness the reel lays down. A bolder line is easier to see at distance and across rough material, and it is less precise — a wide line has a middle that has to be judged.

The 100 ft capacity covers rafter and joist layout, wall lines, and roofing.
