The Milwaukee MIL48-11-1828 is an 18 volt M18 XC high capacity lithium-ion battery.

XC is Milwaukee's extended capacity designation and the trade it represents is the fundamental one in cordless tools.

Capacity is amp-hours, and amp-hours cost size and weight. An XC pack holds more energy than a compact one, and it is bigger and heavier. That buys two things, and the second is the one people miss.

The obvious benefit is runtime — more energy means longer between charges.

The less obvious benefit is current delivery. A high-drain tool — a saw, a grinder, a large impact wrench — pulls hard, and a small pack delivers that current with more internal resistance, which means more heat and more voltage sag. The tool feels weaker and the pack gets hot, and heat is what kills lithium cells. A larger pack has more cells sharing the load, so it runs cooler and delivers more consistently. A high-drain tool on a compact pack underperforms and shortens the pack's life.

So pack choice follows the tool, not the runtime preference: compact packs for drills and lights, XC packs for anything with a real motor load.
