The Mars M82136 is a 20 amp cartridge fuse for branch circuit, control, and equipment protection in HVAC, refrigeration, and general electrical work.

Cartridge fuses seat into spring clips or bolted terminals in fuse blocks, disconnect switches, and safety switches. The construction provides a robust, low-resistance connection able to tolerate the repeated thermal cycling of motor and heater loads, and supports much higher interrupting ratings than plug fuse designs.

At 20 amps, common applications include control transformer protection, small motor and fan circuits, condensate pump and accessory loads, heater and heat trace circuits, and equipment subfeeds in panels and disconnects.

Selecting a replacement requires matching more than amperage. Fuse class determines interrupting rating and time-current characteristic, and equipment listings are tied to specific classes. In circuits feeding motors, transformers, and solenoids, a time delay fuse is required to survive energization inrush; substituting a fast-acting type produces repeated nuisance opening that is often misdiagnosed as a circuit fault. Conversely, fitting a larger fuse to stop repeated opening removes the protection the manufacturer specified and leaves conductors and windings exposed.

When a fuse fails without an evident circuit fault, inspect the fuse clips. Spring tension relaxes over years of heating and cooling, and the resulting high resistance joint generates enough heat to open the element prematurely.

Verify class, voltage rating, amperage, dimensions, and delay characteristic against the original. De-energize and lock out the circuit and confirm absence of voltage before servicing.
