Product Highlights
Description
The Mainstream Engineering QT2000 Qwikcheck is an acid test kit for refrigeration system oil.
Acid in a refrigeration system indicates that a chemical breakdown has occurred, and identifying it changes what a repair should involve.
Acid forms when moisture is present in the system and reacts with the refrigerant and oil, and the process accelerates at the elevated temperatures a compressor produces. The acid then attacks the compressor's winding insulation, which leads eventually to a winding failure, and it plates copper onto steel surfaces within the compressor.
The practical significance is at compressor replacement. A compressor that failed from a burnout leaves acid and contamination throughout the system, and fitting a new compressor without addressing that contamination will destroy the replacement.
An acid test tells the technician which situation they are in. A clean result suggests a mechanical failure and a straightforward replacement. A positive result requires a proper cleanup: recovery, flushing or multiple filter drier changes, a suction line drier, and follow-up testing.
Testing before deciding the scope of a repair is considerably cheaper than a second compressor.
Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning diagnosis and compressor replacement.
