Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 56761 is a one pound package of lead free solder for plumbing and general soldering.
Soldering and brazing are distinguished by temperature, with the conventional dividing line at 840 degrees Fahrenheit, or 450 Celsius. Filler metals melting below it are solders; those above are brazing alloys.
The practical difference is joint strength and temperature capability. A soldered joint is considerably weaker than a brazed one and softens at lower temperature, which is why refrigerant lines are brazed rather than soldered. Refrigerant systems operate at pressures and temperatures that a soldered joint would not reliably contain, and the vibration from a compressor adds to the demand.
Solder is appropriate for plumbing and hydronic work, condensate drainage, and low pressure applications.
Lead free formulation is a legal requirement for potable water systems in most jurisdictions, following the recognition that lead leaches into drinking water from soldered joints. Lead free solders are typically tin based with additions such as silver, copper, or antimony.
Lead free solders generally have a wider melting range than the traditional tin lead alloys and behave differently, requiring the joint to be held still while the filler solidifies.
Flux is always required, and residue must be removed since it is corrosive.
Confirm the solder is approved for the application, particularly for potable water, and clean both surfaces before assembly.
