The Jackson Safety JKS14779 is a pipe welding aligner, size #10, in cast aluminium.

A pipe aligner holds two pipe ends in position — concentric, square, and at the correct root gap — while the fitter tacks them. That job is harder than it sounds and it is where pipe welds are won or lost.

The root gap is the specific problem. Two pipe ends butted for welding need a consistent gap between them for the root pass to penetrate properly. Too tight and the root does not fuse; too wide and the root burns through. And the gap must be consistent all the way around, on two heavy pieces that want to sag and roll. Holding that by hand, with wedges, or by eye is how bad root passes happen — and a bad root in pressure piping is a defect that shows up on the radiograph after everything is welded out.

Cast aluminium is the material choice and it is deliberate: strong enough for the job and light enough that a fitter actually carries it up a rack rather than leaving it in the truck. A tool that stays in the truck aligns nothing.
