Hart & Cooley Copper Spun Drier 64027

The Hart & Cooley 64027 is a copper spun liquid line filter drier used to remove moisture and particulate contamination from refrigeration and air conditioning circuits.

A filter drier performs two functions that are easy to conflate. It filters, capturing particulate matter such as brazing scale, metal fragments, and debris before they reach the metering device. And it dries, adsorbing moisture into a desiccant core.

Moisture is the more serious of the two problems. It forms acids in combination with refrigerant and lubricant, and those acids attack motor winding insulation. It can also freeze at the metering device, where the pressure drop produces the lowest temperature in the system, blocking flow intermittently in a pattern that is difficult to diagnose because the system runs normally between events.

The desiccant has a finite capacity. Once saturated it stops adsorbing, and a drier that has reached that point is no longer protecting the system. This is why a new drier is fitted whenever a system is opened, and why the drier is always replaced after a compressor failure.

Fitting a drier in the wrong orientation defeats it. The flow direction arrow must point toward the metering device.

Confirm connection sizes, capacity rating, and refrigerant compatibility before ordering, and note the pressure drop across the drier during service, since a rising drop indicates restriction.
