General Tools Magnetic Torpedo Level 839

The General Tools 839 is a magnetic torpedo level, a compact spirit level with magnets for attaching to steel surfaces.

Levelling matters in more of this trade than it might appear, and getting it wrong causes faults that are diagnosed as something else.

Condensate drainage depends entirely on it. A drain pan that is not level, or is sloped away from its outlet, holds water regardless of how clear the drain line is. The standing water then supports biological growth and eventually overflows, and the technician called out finds a clear drain line and a full pan.

Condensate pumps depend on level for their float mechanisms to operate at the intended levels.

Outdoor units should be set level so that the compressor sits as designed and oil returns properly, and so that the base does not collect water.

Duct and pipe runs need consistent fall where they carry condensate, and a level with a magnetic base can be attached to the run while both hands do the work.

The magnetic feature is what makes a torpedo level practical in this trade, since most of what needs levelling is steel and the technician rarely has a spare hand.

Confirm the level is accurate by checking it against a known surface and reversing it end for end, since a level that reads differently in the two orientations is out of calibration.
