General Tools Inspection Mirror 5562

The General Tools 5562 is an inspection mirror used to view components and connections that cannot be seen directly.

A great deal of diagnostic work depends on seeing something, and equipment is not built to be looked at. Terminal connections sit behind panels, heat exchanger surfaces face away from any access opening, fasteners are located where a hand fits but an eye does not, and dropped components come to rest under equipment.

An inspection mirror on a handle extends sight into those positions. It is among the simplest tools in a service kit and among the most consistently useful.

The applications in this trade are specific and frequent. Checking heat exchanger surfaces for cracking or corrosion. Reading a nameplate on a compressor whose label faces a wall. Examining terminal connections for discolouration without dismantling. Locating a leak indication on the underside of a coil. Finding a dropped screw before it lodges somewhere it will cause damage.

A mirror is far more effective with a light source, and much inspection work amounts to positioning a light and a mirror so that one illuminates what the other reveals.

Mirror size is a compromise between field of view and the access required to get it into position.

Confirm the mirror size and handle length suit the access encountered, and keep the surface clean, as a dirty mirror in poor light shows very little.
