The General Tools 70396 is a 24 inch lighted pick up tool with a flexible shaft and magnetic tip, used to retrieve dropped items from inaccessible locations.

Dropped fasteners are a routine occurrence and occasionally a serious one. A screw that falls into a blower housing, into a duct, or into the base of an air handler is not merely inconvenient. It can be drawn into a rotating wheel, jam a mechanism, damage a component, or produce a rattle that generates a callback.

In an electrical enclosure a dropped metal item is worse, since it can bridge between terminals and cause a fault the next time the equipment is energised.

The consequence is that a dropped item generally has to be recovered rather than written off, and recovery is often from a position where a hand cannot reach and nothing can be seen.

A flexible magnetic pick up with an integral light addresses both problems at once, illuminating the space and retrieving the item without dismantling equipment to reach it.

Flexibility allows the tool to follow a path around obstructions, which is usually necessary since the item has fallen through a gap that a straight tool cannot follow.

The magnet only works on ferrous items. Brass, aluminium, and plastic components require a claw type retriever instead.
