FAMCO Butterfly Damper BD8

The FAMCO BD8 is an 8 inch butterfly backdraft damper for inline installation in round duct.

Eight inch duct covers a broad range of ventilation duties, from larger bathroom and laundry exhaust through workshop and utility ventilation to light commercial exhaust and attic ventilation. It is one of the more commonly stocked damper sizes for that reason.

A backdraft damper closes the duct whenever the fan is off, and the consequences of omitting one are cumulative rather than dramatic. Conditioned air escapes continuously through an open duct, wind pressure drives outdoor air back into the building, insects and small animals find the opening, and in cold climates the reverse flow can carry enough cold air to cause condensation and frost within the duct. On a bathroom or kitchen exhaust, odours retained in the duct return to the room.

There is also a combustion safety dimension. Open exhaust paths contribute to building depressurisation, and in buildings with naturally vented gas appliances that depressurisation can be sufficient to cause backdrafting at the draft hood.

Installation orientation determines function. The blade must be able to fall closed under gravity, which requires correct positioning relative to airflow direction and to vertical. Verify the blade opens fully with the fan running and closes completely when it stops.

Applications include residential and light commercial exhaust and ventilation systems.
