FAMCO Butterfly Damper BD10

The FAMCO BD10 is a 10 inch butterfly backdraft damper for installation inline in round duct.

At 10 inch diameter, this damper suits substantial exhaust and ventilation duties: larger bathroom and utility exhaust, kitchen ventilation, workshop and garage exhaust, attic and whole house ventilation, and light commercial applications.

Larger dampers make the mechanical design more consequential. The blade is heavier, which means more fan pressure is required to lift it open, and a damper that does not fully open imposes resistance on the system and reduces delivered airflow. Conversely a blade that is too light for the duct size may flutter under variable pressure, producing a repeated tapping noise that is a frequent source of complaints. Matching the damper to the fan's capability, and to the duct size actually installed rather than the nominal size, matters at this diameter.

The damper's purpose is to close the duct when the fan is off. Without one, the duct is a continuous opening between the building and outdoors, admitting wind driven outdoor air, losing conditioned air, allowing insects and debris to enter, and contributing to building depressurisation that can backdraft naturally vented combustion appliances.

Mount in the correct orientation relative to airflow direction and to vertical so the blade can fall closed under gravity, and support the duct on both sides.

Applications include residential and light commercial exhaust and ventilation systems.
