ESP Circuit Protection Lil Popper 5 Amp POP5

The ESP Lil Popper POP5 provides 5 amp overcurrent protection for low voltage control circuits in HVAC, heating, and refrigeration equipment, guarding the control transformer against damage from short circuits in the field wiring or connected components.

Low voltage control circuits are exposed to a wide range of failure modes. Thermostat cable is routed through walls, attics, and equipment cabinets where it can be pinched by sheet metal, punctured by fasteners, chewed by rodents, or degraded by moisture. Control components fail internally: contactor coils short, gas valve solenoids break down, and water-damaged boards develop conductive paths. Any of these creates a fault current that a 24 volt control transformer cannot survive for long without protection.

A correctly sized protective device interrupts that fault before the transformer overheats. Replacing a protector is a low-cost, immediate repair; replacing a burned transformer means additional parts, additional labour, and often a return visit.

The 5 amp rating suits larger control transformers and systems with heavier control loads, such as equipment with multiple contactors, valves, dampers, and accessory relays on a single secondary. Sizing should follow the transformer VA rating and the total connected control load so that normal inrush from contactor coils and solenoid valves does not cause nuisance trips.

A tripped device also serves as a diagnostic indicator, telling the technician immediately that a short exists downstream in the control wiring.

Applications include split system air conditioners and heat pumps, gas and electric furnaces, air handlers, packaged rooftop units, and commercial refrigeration control panels.
