Edison Fuse Time Delay 50 Amp ECNR50

The Edison ECNR50 is a 50 amp time delay fuse used for overcurrent protection of motor branch circuits, mechanical equipment, and other loads with substantial starting inrush.

Time delay operation permits the fuse to withstand the momentary high current drawn when a motor or compressor starts, or when a transformer is energized, without opening. It still responds promptly to sustained overload and short circuit conditions. This dual behaviour is what allows a fuse to be sized close to the running load of an inductive circuit, which is where real protection comes from. A fast-acting fuse in the same application would either nuisance-open on startup or, if sized up to avoid that, would fail to protect the conductors and equipment during an actual fault.

Sizing close to running current means the fuse will interrupt the sustained elevated draw associated with locked rotor conditions, shorted windings, mechanical binding, loss of a phase, or a failed run capacitor, before the motor is damaged beyond repair.

Applications include residential and commercial condensing units, compressor circuits, condenser and evaporator fan motors, pumps, fused disconnect switches at HVAC equipment, transformer primary protection, and general equipment feeders.

Equipment nameplates specify both minimum circuit ampacity, which governs conductor sizing, and maximum overcurrent protective device rating, which must not be exceeded by the installed fuse. Where a fuse opens repeatedly, the correct response is to investigate the load rather than to install a larger fuse.

Verify the voltage rating, fuse class, and physical dimensions against the original and the holder, then de-energize and lock out the circuit before replacement.
