Edison Fuse Time Delay 35 Amp ECNR35

The Edison ECNR35 is a 35 amp time delay fuse used to protect motor branch circuits and other equipment loads with significant starting inrush current.

Time delay operation is the defining characteristic. Motors and compressors draw locked rotor current several times their running current during the first moments of startup. A fast-acting fuse sized for the running load would open on every start; sizing up to survive that inrush would leave the conductors and windings inadequately protected during a sustained overload. A time delay fuse tolerates the brief startup surge while opening promptly on a genuine overload or short circuit, allowing the fuse to be sized much closer to the actual running load.

That closer sizing provides real benefit. A motor experiencing a locked rotor condition, a failing bearing, a shorted winding, or single-phase operation on a three phase supply will draw sustained elevated current that a properly sized time delay fuse interrupts before the windings are destroyed.

Applications include air conditioning and refrigeration condensing units, compressor circuits, fan and pump motors, fused disconnect switches at mechanical equipment, transformer primary protection, and general equipment feeders.

Sizing must follow the equipment nameplate. HVAC equipment specifies both a minimum circuit ampacity for conductor sizing and a maximum overcurrent protective device rating that must not be exceeded. Installing a larger fuse to stop nuisance opening masks a real fault and removes the protection the manufacturer specified.

Verify the voltage rating, class, and physical dimensions match the original fuse and the holder. De-energize and lock out the circuit before servicing.
