ECCO 8 Inch Round Butterfly Damper RBD08

The ECCO RBD08 is an 8 inch round butterfly damper, installed inline in round duct to control or prevent airflow.

A butterfly damper consists of a circular blade pivoting on a central shaft within a short duct section. In gravity operation it functions as a backdraft damper: airflow in the intended direction pushes the blade open, and when the fan stops the blade falls closed under its own weight, preventing reverse flow.

That reverse flow is the reason the damper exists. An exhaust duct without a backdraft damper is an open path between the building and the outdoors. Wind pressure drives outdoor air back down the duct, cold air spills into the room in winter, conditioned air escapes continuously, and insects and debris enter. In a bathroom or kitchen exhaust, the reverse path also allows odours from the duct to return to the room.

Backdraft dampers are also a factor in combustion safety. An unrestricted exhaust path contributes to building depressurisation, which can cause naturally vented appliances to backdraft.

Installation orientation determines whether the damper works. The blade must be able to fall closed under gravity, which requires the damper to be mounted in the correct attitude relative to the airflow direction and to vertical. Mounted incorrectly, the blade either stays open or fails to open under fan pressure.

Applications include residential and light commercial exhaust ducts and ventilation systems.
