The DiversiTech T721 is a non-programmable thermostat supporting two stages of heating and one stage of cooling.

Stage capability is the specification that determines whether a thermostat suits the equipment. A two heat, one cool thermostat provides the outputs for a two stage furnace or for a heat pump with supplemental electric heat, alongside single stage cooling.

Fitting a thermostat with insufficient stages leaves equipment capability unused. A two stage furnace controlled by a single stage thermostat will run only on one stage, which either underheats the building or, if wired to the high stage, forfeits the efficiency and comfort benefit that staging provides.

Fitting one with more stages than the equipment has is harmless but pointless.

Non-programmable thermostats retain a place despite the availability of programmable and connected models. They suit occupants who will not use a schedule, rental properties where a simple interface reduces service calls, and applications where the space is occupied continuously and setback offers no benefit. A programmable thermostat that is left permanently on hold is functionally a non-programmable one at higher cost.

Confirm the equipment's staging, the control voltage, and whether a common conductor is available before selection.
